Twenty years ago this week I was spending days travelling on a camel through the desert. I was with a group of school girls and other teachers on an expedition to Sinai. We were led by a guide from ‘Wind Sand and Stars’ and cared for by a group of Bedouin who cooked for us, watched over our safety and lent us their camels to ride on, over the wide rocky plains.
We slept on thin mats on the earth, used nearby rocks as a ‘bathroom’ and ate delicious meals with bread cooked over small fires of brushwood. In the evenings we shared a ‘thought for the day’ around the campfire. After trekking on camels for several days we were taken to the foot of Mount Sinai and climbed it’s slope to the summit. We then walked down the ‘pilgrim steps’ to St Catherine’s monastery to stay the night and the next day visited the extraordinary ancient church. These were memorable days for all of us. For me they were an unknown preparation for all that the end of 2000 would bring for our family. I have rediscovered the journal I wrote on this journey, found the drawings I made and the photos. Looking at all these again has been encouraging and challenging. Today we all face days of vulnerability and limitations and we feel we are journeying into the unknown. I hope the posts I share over the next days and weeks will bring some inspiration and warmth.
